Extreme CFD workshop

Every year, the Extreme CFD workshop & hackathon brings together researchers, engineers and PhD students around YALES2, working on topics such as CPU/GPU porting, combustion, dynamic mesh adaptation, multi-phase flows and numerics. Attendance has grown steadily from 23 participants at the first edition (Toulouse, 2017) to nearly 100 at the most recent one (Houlgate, 2026). The 10th edition is scheduled for January 18–29, 2027 at Centre Sportif de Normandie in Houlgate — see the workshop site for the call for participation.

Academic laboratories

YALES2 is developed and used across a network of French research laboratories:

  • Institut Pprime (Poitiers)
  • PRISME (Orléans)
  • LAAS-CNRS (Toulouse) — Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes
  • LGC (Toulouse) — Laboratoire de Génie Chimique
  • LMFA (Lyon) — Laboratoire de Mécanique des Fluides et d'Acoustique
  • ONERA — The French Aerospace Lab
  • INERIS — French National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks

Three specialized YALES2 derivatives are co-developed with partner laboratories: YALES2HYDRO, for hydraulic turbines, with LEGI in Grenoble; and YALES2BIO, for bio-mechanical flows, with IMAG in Montpellier. Please contact these laboratories for more information.

Industrial partners

SAFRAN is YALES2's longest-standing industrial partner, having funded three successive industrialization projects at CORIA since 2011 (2011–2015, 2016–2022, 2023–2031) across its Aircraft Engines, Helicopter Engines, Nacelles and Tech entities. The current project also includes ARIANE GROUP and GDTECH, and both SAFRAN and ARIANE GROUP co-supervise CIFRE PhD students working on YALES2 developments.

Across the years, the YALES2 software was also licensed to SOLVAY, AIR LIQUIDE, TOTALENERGIES, ADWEN, SIEMENS-GAMESA RENEWABLE ENERGIES, GE HYDRO, HORIBA, YPSO FACTO and GDF-SUEZ, and has been supported with a CIFRE PhD research with RENAULT.

International collaborations

Beyond France, the YALES2 team collaborates with the University of Mons, University of Liège and UCLouvain in Belgium, with TU Delft in the Netherlands, and with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center through the H2020 Center of Excellence in Combustion (CoEC).

Training

More than 700 researchers and engineers have been trained to use YALES2 since 2010, across academic laboratories and industrial partners.

Contributing

YALES2 is developed collaboratively at CORIA, with around 10% of development effort contributed by industrial partners (SAFRAN, ARIANE GROUP, GDTECH). If your team is interested in contributing a solver, a test case, or documentation, see Get YALES2 for how to get in touch.
